Cairo Airport to Downtown & Giza: Uber, Taxi and Bus (2026)
Cairo Airport is 20 km from Downtown and 40 km from the Pyramids. Measured road distances, real travel times, Uber fares and the exact pickup point at Terminals 2 and 3 — plus when Sphinx Airport is the smarter choice.

Cairo International Airport (CAI) is about 20 km by road from Downtown and Zamalek and 40 km from the Giza Pyramids. The easiest way into the city is an Uber or Careem booked in the app: roughly 250–400 EGP (≈5–8 USD) to Downtown and 300–500 EGP (≈6–10 USD) to Giza, and the ride takes 40–120 minutes depending on traffic. If you land at Sphinx International Airport (SPX) in west Giza instead, the pyramids are 36 km away on a far less congested desert highway.
That's the short version. Below you'll find the road distances we measured for every main route, the exact Uber pickup point in each terminal, what official taxis and buses cost, what to do in what order once you land, and which hotel area makes sense if you arrive at 3 a.m.
Last checked: 7 October 2026. Prices are in Egyptian pounds (EGP); 1 USD ≈ 50 EGP. Ride-hailing fares move with demand, but the app shows you a fixed price before you confirm.
Quick answer: distance, time and fare for each route
We calculated the road distances with OpenStreetMap routing, starting from Terminals 2 and 3 at CAI and from the SPX terminal. The times are realistic door-to-door ranges for Cairo traffic, not the empty-road estimates you see in a map app at midnight.
| Route | Road distance | Typical time | Uber / Careem (approx.) |
|---|---|---|---|
| CAI → Heliopolis | 10–12 km | 15–30 min | 120–200 EGP |
| CAI → Khan el-Khalili | 17–19 km | 35–70 min | 200–350 EGP |
| CAI → Downtown (Tahrir) | 20–22 km | 40–90 min | 250–400 EGP |
| CAI → Zamalek | 21–23 km | 40–90 min | 250–400 EGP |
| CAI → Grand Egyptian Museum | 38–40 km | 60–120 min | 300–500 EGP |
| CAI → Giza Pyramids | 40–42 km | 60–120 min | 300–500 EGP |
| SPX → Giza Pyramids | 36 km | 35–55 min | 300–450 EGP |
| SPX → Downtown (Tahrir) | 44 km | 50–90 min | 350–550 EGP |
Distances to Heliopolis are measured to Baron Empain Palace in Korba, and distances to the pyramids to the Mena House gate.
Why the times vary so much: the worst traffic is roughly 8–11 a.m. and 3–8 p.m. from Sunday to Thursday. Friday mornings and late nights are the quietest. After midnight, the drive from CAI to Downtown can take as little as 25–30 minutes.
Which Cairo airport are you flying into?
Cairo has two international airports, on opposite sides of the city:
- Cairo International Airport (CAI) is the main airport, in the north-east next to Heliopolis. It handles nearly all long-haul and full-service flights and is the EgyptAir hub. It has three passenger terminals (T1, T2 and T3) plus a Seasonal Flights terminal.
- Sphinx International Airport (SPX) is a smaller airport in west Giza, just off the Cairo–Alexandria desert road. It is served mainly by low-cost and regional airlines, such as easyJet, Wizz Air, Air Arabia and flydubai.
A common myth: SPX is "right next to the pyramids." It isn't. By road it's 36 km from the Mena House gate, versus about 40 km from CAI. Some sites quote 8 km between Sphinx and the Grand Egyptian Museum, but even in a straight line it's about 26 km, and by road about 33 km. What makes SPX the better option for Giza is the route. From SPX you're on a fast desert highway, while from CAI you have to cross the whole city or loop round the Ring Road.
CAI terminals: which one, and how to change terminals
- Terminal 3: EgyptAir and most Star Alliance airlines. Domestic EgyptAir flights to Luxor, Aswan or Sharm usually leave from T2 or T3, so check your booking.
- Terminals 1 and 2: most other international airlines. Your ticket or the airline's app shows the terminal.
- Changing terminals: a free automated people mover (a small airport train) links T1, the car park, T2 and T3. It runs around the clock, every 7–10 minutes, and takes about 5 minutes end to end. Free shuttle buses also run between terminals.
Step by step: what to do after you land at CAI
- Visa. If you don't already have an e-Visa, buy the visa on arrival (25 USD, in cash) at the bank counters before passport control. USD, EUR and GBP are accepted; Egyptian pounds are not. Our Egypt visa guide covers every option.
- Passport control, then baggage claim and customs.
- Cash. There are ATMs in the arrivals hall after customs. Take out enough for porters, tips and small payments; our tipping guide explains how much you'll need.
- Data. Activate the eSIM you bought at home, or buy a Vodafone, Orange or WE SIM at the 24-hour kiosks in arrivals (bring your passport). You need mobile data to call an Uber, so don't count on airport Wi-Fi. See our SIM and eSIM guide.
- Your ride. Open Uber or Careem before leaving the building, then walk to the pickup point below. Politely ignore anyone inside the hall offering "taxi."
Uber and Careem at Cairo Airport: where to meet your driver
These pickup points come from Uber's official Cairo airport pages (checked October 2026). The app always shows the current meeting point, so follow it if it differs.
| Terminal | Uber pickup point | How to get there |
|---|---|---|
| Terminal 2 | Curbside, outside Gate 7 | After customs, turn left and leave through Gate 7 |
| Terminal 3 | Car park, spot B5 | Leave baggage claim, follow signs to Gate 4, then the Car Park signs, and take the stairs down |
| Terminal 1 | As shown in the app | Follow the in-app directions |
A few things that make the ride smoother:
- Book only inside the app. Someone in the terminal who says he's "your Uber" is not your Uber. Before you get in, check that the plate and the driver's photo match the app.
- Compare Uber and Careem. Both work at CAI and SPX, and the same trip is sometimes noticeably cheaper on one of them.
- Landing in the middle of the night? Uber Reserve lets you book a pickup in advance with flight tracking and a price fixed at booking.
- Paying: card in the app, or cash. If you pay cash, carry small notes, because drivers often can't break a 200 EGP note.
Official taxis, limousines and hotel transfers
| Option | To Downtown (approx.) | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| UberX / Careem | 250–400 EGP | Almost everyone |
| Official white taxi (counter inside) | 400–600 EGP | No smartphone or no data |
| Airport limousine (counter at the exit) | 500–800 EGP | A bigger, newer car without using an app |
| Hotel transfer / meet & greet | 600–1,200 EGP | Late-night arrivals, families, first-timers |
If you take a street taxi at the curb, agree the full price (and say "for the car, not per person") before your bags go in the boot, or insist on the meter. Our list of common scams in Cairo explains how the airport-taxi upsell works.
Public buses and the metro: possible, but not with luggage
- There's no metro to the airport yet. Line 3 goes through Heliopolis, but its planned airport branch has no completion date, and the nearest stations are several kilometres from the terminals.
- Public buses run by Mwasalat Misr and the Cairo Transport Authority leave from the airport bus station, which the terminals' shuttle buses connect to. Fares are tiny (well under 1 USD). But route numbers change, signs are mostly in Arabic, and the trip takes 1–1.5 hours or more. They only make sense if you're travelling light and already know the city.

Arriving at night, or flying out early
Many flights land between midnight and dawn. You have two good options:
- Go straight to your hotel. Traffic is light at that hour, so Downtown is about 30 minutes away and Giza about 45.
- Sleep near the airport. Heliopolis is only 10–12 km from the terminals, about 15–25 minutes away. This is especially sensible if you have an early domestic flight to Luxor or Aswan the next morning. Prime Boutique Heliopolis Terrace is the airport-side hotel we list.
Flying out? Aim to be at the terminal 3 hours before an international flight. There's a security check at the terminal entrance before check-in. From a Giza hotel on a weekday afternoon, allow up to 2 hours for the drive.
Where to stay, depending on your airport
| If you… | Base yourself in | Hotels on our list |
|---|---|---|
| Land late at CAI or fly out early | Heliopolis (10–12 km from CAI) | Prime Boutique Heliopolis Terrace |
| Want the museums, Tahrir and the Nile | Downtown or Zamalek (≈20 km from CAI) | Royal Cairo Hotel, H Zamalek Suites |
| Want to wake up facing the pyramids | Giza (≈40 km from CAI, 36 km from SPX) | Mamlouk Pyramids Hotel, Pyramids Planet Hotel |
| Fly into Sphinx (SPX) | West Giza / 6th of October | Swiss Inn Pyramids Golf Resort: 29 km from SPX by road, vs 48 km from CAI |

Six airport mistakes that cost travellers time and money
- Taking a ride from someone who walks up to you in arrivals. Book in the app or at an official counter.
- Landing without USD or EUR cash for the visa on arrival. The ATMs are after passport control.
- Having no mobile data when you land, which means you can't call an Uber. Install an eSIM before you fly.
- Underestimating traffic to the airport from Giza on a weekday afternoon.
- Assuming SPX is next to the pyramids. It's close to the desert road, not to the plateau.
- Going to the wrong terminal when you fly out. Check your ticket. If you do get it wrong, the people mover gets you to the right one in about 5 minutes.
How we checked this guide
- Distances: OpenStreetMap road data run through the OSRM routing engine, from the coordinates of CAI Terminals 2 and 3 and of SPX to each destination (7 October 2026).
- Uber pickup points: Uber's official pages for Cairo Airport, including its Terminal 2 and Terminal 3 pages.
- Visa: the official Egyptian e-Visa portal, visa2egypt.gov.eg, plus our own visa guide.
- Fares: these are indicative ranges for autumn 2026, consistent with our transport guide. Always confirm the upfront price in the app.

Frequently asked questions
How far is Cairo Airport from the Pyramids?+
About 40 km by road from Terminals 2 and 3 of Cairo International Airport (CAI) to the Mena House gate of the Giza Pyramids. The drive takes 60–120 minutes depending on traffic, and an UberX costs roughly 300–500 EGP (≈6–10 USD). If you fly into Sphinx International Airport (SPX) instead, the pyramids are 36 km away and the ride usually takes 35–55 minutes on the desert highway.
How much is an Uber from Cairo Airport to Downtown?+
Around 250–400 EGP (≈5–8 USD) for an UberX or Careem to Downtown or Zamalek, about 20–22 km by road. The ride takes 40–90 minutes depending on traffic, and as little as 25–30 minutes after midnight. The app shows a fixed price before you confirm.
Where is the Uber pickup point at Cairo Airport?+
According to Uber's official airport pages: at Terminal 2 the driver waits curbside outside Gate 7 (turn left after customs). At Terminal 3 the pickup is in the car park at spot B5 (follow signs to Gate 4, then the Car Park signs, and take the stairs down). Always follow the meeting point shown in the app.
Is there a metro or train from Cairo Airport to the city?+
No. Cairo Metro Line 3 runs through Heliopolis, but its planned airport branch has no completion date, and the nearest stations are several kilometres from the terminals. Public buses leave from the airport bus station and are very cheap, but they are slow and hard to use with luggage. Uber, Careem or an official taxi are the practical options.
Should I fly into Cairo International (CAI) or Sphinx (SPX) if I'm staying in Giza?+
If your airline flies to Sphinx, it's usually the faster option for Giza. The distance is similar (36 km vs about 40 km to the pyramids), but from SPX you use a fast desert highway instead of crossing Cairo. CAI has far more flights, though, and is the better choice for Downtown, Zamalek or Heliopolis.
Can I get a visa on arrival at Cairo Airport?+
Yes. Most nationalities can buy a 30-day tourist visa on arrival for 25 USD in cash (USD, EUR or GBP; Egyptian pounds are not accepted) at the bank counters before passport control. Alternatively, apply in advance for an e-Visa on the official portal, visa2egypt.gov.eg.
