How We Pick Hotels
Why this page exists
Most hotel lists online are one of two things: an automated price feed, or a ranking where whoever pays most appears first. Cairo Stay Finder is neither. Every hotel on this site was chosen by hand, by people who know Cairo, using the criteria below. This page explains exactly what those criteria are — so you can judge our recommendations with full information.
What a hotel needs to be listed
1. A location that is honestly described
Cairo is enormous, and "near the Pyramids" can mean a five-minute walk or a forty-five-minute taxi ride. We only list hotels whose location we can describe honestly and specifically: which neighbourhood, what you can walk to, how you get to the main sights, and what the area is like at night. If a location has downsides — noise, traffic, nothing around — we say so on the hotel's page.
2. Recent, verified guest reviews
A rating means little if it was earned five years ago. Before listing a hotel we read its recent verified reviews on the major booking platforms, looking less at the average score and more at what guests actually complain about. As a rule of thumb we look for hotels scoring 8 or higher, but a strong recent track record matters more than a decimal point.
3. Fair value for its price tier
We compare hotels against their own price bracket (€, €€, €€€), not against each other. A simple budget hotel can earn its place by being clean, safe and well located; a more expensive one has to justify the difference. What we look for at every price point: working air conditioning, hot water, reliable Wi-Fi and staff that guests consistently describe as helpful.
4. The friend test
The final filter is simple: would we send a friend there on their first trip to Cairo? If the honest answer is "only with caveats", the hotel doesn't go on the site. There are far more hotels in Cairo than hotels on this site — that is deliberate.
What disqualifies a hotel
- Repeated recent complaints about hidden charges, pressure to tip, or scams.
- Photos that no longer match reality.
- A location marketed as something it isn't.
- A clear downward trend in recent reviews, even if the average is still high.
We also remove hotels: if a listed hotel starts accumulating bad recent reviews, it comes off the site.
What about commissions?
Some links to hotels are affiliate links (mainly Booking.com): if you book through them we may earn a small commission, at no extra cost to you. That commission never decides which hotels appear or in what order — selection happens first, on the criteria above; the link comes after. If we are unsure about a hotel, we leave it out, even if it would pay better. Full details in our Affiliate Disclosure.
