What to See in Cairo in 1 Day: Layover and Short-Trip Itinerary
From an 8-hour layover to a full intense day — pyramids, museum, bazaar and Nile dinner. The maximum you can get out of Cairo in 24 hours.

Only 24 hours in Cairo? It's very little for a city of 20 million people and 5,000 years of history, but you can absolutely build a memorable day: Pyramids at sunrise, Grand Egyptian Museum at midday, Khan el-Khalili at sunset, dinner with Nile views. This guide gives you the exact plan, whether you're on an 8-hour layover, an overnight, or a full day.
Who is this guide for?
- 8–12-hour layover between flights.
- One single night in Cairo on a longer Egypt trip (Luxor, Red Sea, etc.).
- Deciding whether to extend the visit after a day.
If you have 3+ days, see What to See in Cairo in 3 Days — the relaxed version with more depth.
Premise: priorities
In 1 day you have to give up 80% of the city. The optimal pick:
✅ Pyramids of Giza + Sphinx — non-negotiable. ✅ Grand Egyptian Museum — the entire summary of Egypt in 2 hours. ✅ Khan el-Khalili + a slice of Islamic Cairo — soul and atmosphere. ✅ Dinner in Zamalek or Garden City with Nile views — cinematic ending.
❌ Saqqara, Dahshur, Memphis — save them for another trip. ❌ Coptic Cairo, full Citadel, long Al-Muizz route — same. ❌ Tahrir Museum — only if you skip the GEM (not recommended).
Itinerary for a full day (08:00 – 22:00)
07:00 — Leave the hotel
Early breakfast. Bag packed. Uber ordered.
08:00 — Pyramids of Giza
- General entry (~540 EGP).
- Walk around the Great Pyramid of Khufu.
- Drive up to the desert panorama point (classic shot with all three pyramids).
- End at the Sphinx with Khafre behind.
- Don't go inside a pyramid today — it costs you 45–60 critical minutes. Save it for another trip.
10:30 — Toward the GEM
2 km away. Uber or short walk. The GEM opens at 09:00.
11:00 — Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM)
- Online ticket (~1,450 EGP).
- Three hours: the Grand Staircase, the Chronological Gallery and the Tutankhamun Gallery (separate ticket, ~700 EGP — worth it).
- Light lunch in the museum or a nearby restaurant.
14:30 — Back to the centre
Uber to Downtown / Tahrir / Khan el-Khalili. 40–60 min depending on traffic.
15:30 — Khan el-Khalili + slice of Al-Muizz
- Walk the bazaar (the most famous market in Egypt since the 14th century).
- Head up Al-Muizz Street to the Qalawun complex (15-minute stroll).
- Tea at El Fishawy (historic café since 1773) — essential.
- Buy something small (spices, hibiscus tea, a scarf).
18:00 — Back to the hotel for a refresh
Quick shower if you have a room.
19:30 — Dinner with Nile views
- Zamalek (Sequoia, Andrea, Abou El Sid).
- Garden City (any Corniche hotel rooftop restaurant).
- Short felucca cruise (traditional sailboat) at sunset for romance.
22:00 — End
If you have a hotel, rest. If you have a night flight, Uber to the airport (60–90 min buffer).
Variations by available time
Very short layover (6–8 hours, with transit visa)
Time for one thing only:
- Pyramids + Sphinx + express GEM (4–5 hours + 2–3 hours of airport transfers).
- Skip the bazaar and dinner. Go straight back.
- Consider an organised tour with airport-to-airport transfer — removes friction.
12–18-hour layover
Stick with the full version above. You have time for everything.
Overnight + full day
Ideal plan — the one in this guide. Margin for surprises.
Two days, one night
Jump to What to See in Cairo in 3 Days and do only days 1 and 2.
Key logistics
Transit visa
Egypt offers a visa on arrival for most nationalities (EU, USA, UK, Canada, etc.) — about 25 USD, valid 30 days. Get it as you step off the plane. No prior paperwork. Cash payment (USD or EUR both fine).
Luggage
- Overnight: leave it at the hotel.
- Layover without a hotel: airport baggage storage (Terminals 2 and 3, ~150–300 EGP per item per day).
Airport transport
- Uber/Careem: 200–500 EGP to the centre, 350–700 EGP to Giza. Easiest option.
- White taxi with meter: ok if you negotiate.
- Hotel transfer: if you booked a hotel, most offer airport meet & greet.
Paying for tickets
- Ticket booths at GEM, Pyramids and museums accept card and cash (EGP).
- Carry around ~3,000 EGP in cash just in case (tickets + Uber + food + tips).
Mistakes that ruin your day
- Arriving at the Pyramids after 10:00 — heat, crowds, you lose 2 hours of queue.
- Not booking the GEM — no ticket, no entry.
- Not using Uber — non-metered taxis steal time and money.
- Trying to do too much — adding Saqqara, Coptic Cairo or Islamic Cairo to the day breaks it. Accept the sacrifice.
- Not eating real food at lunch — heat + 8 hours of monuments need real fuel.
Where to stay for a 1-day visit
Depends on your priority:
- If your plan starts at the Pyramids: stay in Giza / Al Haram. You walk out of the hotel into the Pyramids. Saves 30–45 min of traffic.
- If you have a very early or late flight: stay near the airport (Heliopolis / New Cairo). 10–15 min to the airport.
- If you'll mix Giza with central Cairo: stay Downtown or Garden City — good middle ground.
Is Cairo worth 1 day?
Yes, if you're into history. Pyramids + GEM in a day give you a sufficient taste to understand why this place is unique. But you'll leave wanting to come back — and that's a good thing.
