What to See in Cairo in 3 Days: Balanced Itinerary
A balanced 3-day route combining Giza, museums, Islamic Cairo, Coptic Cairo, markets and a side trip to Saqqara or Dahshur.

Three days is the sweet spot for Cairo: enough time for the must-sees without rushing, and a little room for something off the obvious path on the last day. This itinerary is built for a first visit and combines the key blocks: Pyramids, museums, Islamic Cairo, Coptic Cairo and an archaeological side trip.
Before you start
- Where to stay: Garden City, Zamalek or Downtown work best. If the Pyramids are your priority, consider Giza for the first or last night.
- Getting around: Uber and Careem work perfectly. Skip random street taxis.
- Money: carry Egyptian pounds in cash for tickets, tips and small expenses.
- Dress: respect places of worship (shoulders and knees covered).
Day 1 — Pyramids of Giza and Grand Egyptian Museum
The most spectacular day. Start early.
08:00 — Arrive at the Pyramids when they open. Start at the panorama point in the desert (10 minutes by car from the entrance), then move to the Great Pyramid of Khufu. If you want to go inside, do it here or at Khafre.
11:00 — Visit the Sphinx. Take the classic photos with Khafre behind.
13:00 — Lunch at one of the Giza restaurants with Pyramid views.
14:30 — Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM). 2 km away. Book online. Three hours are enough for the essentials: the Tutankhamun collection and the grand staircase.
19:00 — Back to the hotel and a relaxed dinner.
Day 2 — Islamic Cairo, Khan el-Khalili and Coptic Cairo
The historic heart of the city.
09:00 — Start at the Citadel of Saladin: the Muhammad Ali Mosque (alabaster) and one of the best viewpoints in Cairo.
11:30 — Walk or drive down to Al-Muizz Street, the main avenue of medieval Cairo. Mosques, madrasas and Mamluk palaces on both sides.
13:00 — Arrive at Khan el-Khalili (the bazaar). Lunch at the legendary El Fishawy Café, open since 1773.
15:00 — Afternoon shopping and bargaining at the bazaar: spices, copperware, perfumes, lamps.
16:30 — Uber to Coptic Cairo (the Christian quarter). Visit the Hanging Church, the church of Saint Sergius and the Coptic Museum.
19:00 — Dinner in Zamalek with Nile views or a short sunset Nile cruise.
Day 3 — Classic Egyptian Museum + Saqqara side trip
09:00 — Egyptian Museum in Tahrir. Most of the collection moved to GEM (and the royal mummies to the NMEC), but the building itself and the Narmer Palette are still must-sees. Two hours are enough.
12:00 — Head to Saqqara (40 minutes by car). Light lunch on the way.
13:30 — Step Pyramid of Djoser (the oldest pyramid in Egypt), decorated tombs, and the funerary complex. If you still have energy, continue to Dahshur to see the Red Pyramid and the Bent Pyramid (another 20 minutes) — far less touristy than Giza.
18:00 — Back to Cairo. A relaxed final dinner. If you have any energy left, try a felucca ride (traditional sailing boat) on the Nile at sunset.
Variations by traveller type
- With kids: skip Saqqara on day 3 and use the afternoon for the Cairo Tower (views) and the Giza zoo.
- History buffs: swap day 3 for a full Memphis + Saqqara + Dahshur day.
- Urban culture fans: spend day 3 in Maadi (cafés and art) and the bohemian side of Garden City.
- Layover stay (24–36h): combine day 1 with the Citadel and Khan el-Khalili from day 2.
Mistakes to avoid
- Not booking the GEM: capacity is controlled, no ticket = no entry.
- Arriving late at the Pyramids: by noon the heat and crowds kill the magic.
- Underestimating traffic: always leave 20–30 minutes of buffer between activities.
- No midday break: in summer, a 14:00–16:00 hotel rest is the difference between enjoying the city and burning out.
